Some students may take AP Precalculus their junior year as a precursor to AP calculus, others can take the new course their senior year more generally as a precursor to college-level math. The course covers a “broad spectrum of function types that are foundational for careers in mathematics, physics, biology, health science, social science, and data science,” according to the College Board which began to offer this new AP Precalculus course beginning in fall 2023.

AP Research Course Description (Note: AP Seminar is a prerequisite for students wishing to earn the AP Capstone Diploma). Completing AP Seminar and all its required assessment components is highly encouraged for students to develop the skills to be successful in AP Research; it is not, however, a requirement. This course, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.
AP Research Course and Exam Description 2020 College Board AP Capstone Program AP Research Curricular Requirements: The curricular requirements are the core elements of an AP course. The curriculum framework and supporting documents provided during professional development serve as resources to assist teachers in determining the appropriate level of evidence to include within their syllabi to meet or exceed the requirements. (All AP Research teachers must attend College Board AP Research intensive training prior to their first year of teaching the AP Research course.) Evidence of the following curricular requirements should be included in the course syllabus developed by the teacher and submitted to College Board for review and approval.

Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x (ChiLat) history is US History. This course will engage students in a year-long exploration of the experiences, contributions and struggles of the ChiLat peoples in the United States of America. Throughout this academically rigorous and culturally relevant and responsive learning journey, students will be guided to deepen their understanding of who they are, from where they come, how they have come to this place in time, and to have a greater sense of where it is they are going (their purpose). Of paramount importance, the goal of this course is to facilitate students to move toward a greater knowledge and love of self (of the nuances, complexity and beauty of their lives, of their challenges and struggles) and their unique, yet connected, story.
This historical investigation begins with the critical connection to and examination of the ancient meso-American past (including the Inca) and its significant relationship to contemporary American society. From there, students will study historic moments and movements spanning European and Spanish colonialism, its impact on indigenous peoples (1st Nations) of the hemisphere and the creation of the mestizo (indigenous, African and European) identity and experience of the ChiLat peoples. The course will engage students through both the use of “big ideas” and inquiry. Critical concepts will anchor the examination of historical events. Themes include Origin & Identity; Dispossession, Displacement & Defiance; Self-Determination & Organizing; Solidarity, Resistance & Liberation.
Students will examine foundational texts in Ethnic Studies and ChiLat Studies as a lense from which to explore the history of the United States. Students will investigate the intersection between ethnicity, culture, nationality, race, and gender and how these aspects of ourselves shape and are shaped by dominant systems. Students will also learn about how the social construct of identity, particularly race, is created, contested, and altered by historic and economic processes. There will be special emphasis on institutions, trends, movements, problems and socio-political advancements relevant to the ChiLat community in the United States, and its relationship to the development of the United States as a whole.
Each student will be supported to:

Students must incorporate differentiated learning strategies for varying types of children. Lesson plans must align with the suggested curriculum for early childhood education settings. Students will continue to work in accordance with the SMPCW on a weekly basis.

Students will practice advanced baking skills while learning about entrepreneurship and event planning. Each unit will incorporate topics around the themes of sustainability in hospitality, and the importance of visual arts and graphic impact in the Culinary setting. During the course, students will learn how to produce pastries and desserts, run a small business model, and organize events. Students will also learn how to produce photography with lighting, composition, framing, and exposure techniques to market and promote their food and their events. Both photographs and food samples will be presented to the class for peer evaluation and positive feedback. As the year progresses, students will begin to develop their creative voice and gain an appreciation for the aesthetic value in marketing food and hospitality experiences. Since this is the capstone course in the SB Unified Culinary Arts Pathway, the course will also provide students with the opportunity to craft their Culinary Resume and put together a portfolio of all of their Culinary career readiness experiences and job skills which they have developed throughout the Pathway.

Drawing and painting are a process that all creative practices emerge from. Drawing is an important skill and a practice that can bring big ideas and concepts to life. It is a process that goes beyond the Art classroom and is a process that can be applied to all aspects of students learning. By the end of this class, it is expected that students will gain a strong foundation in drawing and painting. Composition, the visual element, the principles of design, and the basic techniques and concepts of both drawing and painting will be covered. The end goals are to increase artistic self-confidence, increase one's understanding of the basics of drawing and painting and to create piece the students will be proud to hang on the wall.
Students will take a deep dive into the process of observational drawing and find a personal path to grow their individual studio practice. This course will also have students researching individual artists and art movements to give context to the painting and drawing projects. This will be a chance for students to share personal insight into Artists and periods of Art History with the class.

This course provides a standards-aligned survey curriculum for college-bound students. Students will work on improving their skills in language arts, and have considerable opportunities to practice and develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking. Students will also be faced with a rigorous series of expository writing modules, modules based on California State University recommendations. Students will engage in a survey of World Literature and be faced with a considerable amount of writing tasks in a variety of formats. The course is designed to examine individual tendencies in leadership and to further develop leadership skills in each student. The theme of leadership will be explored in various historical and fictional world leaders, and, through this exploration, students will attempt the answer the question of what makes an effective leader. To track this, we will be completing several assignments to include in your Leadership Thesis Project.

English 9 AAPLE is a survey of the literary genres of poetry, drama, the short story, the novel, and nonfiction. Particular emphasis will be given to improving students' skills in expository writing and the rudiments of literary analysis. This course includes all the elements of English 9, but offers greater enrichment through additional reading of challenging literature (both fiction and nonfiction) and more frequent and rigorous literary analysis. In aligning with the new state standards, students will develop skills necessary for succeeding in college and career. Students will experience relevant, yet rigorous material that will enhance his or her capacity for creating and synthesizing information. Students will work over the course of their four-year cohort classes to create a cohesive leadership thesis project. In their first year, students will begin to explore the elements and characteristics that make up a leader. They will also discover and interpret characteristics that enhance their self-awareness and understanding of responsibility as a leader. Throughout the course, students will participate in outside classroom enrichment activities. Students will be expected to respect and honor the activity (be it a play, museum etc.,) with their behavior. As leaders, students will involve themselves in service in the campus and community.

Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. Chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. Chemistry is often a prerequisite for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science. Both theory and practical work should be undertaken by all students as they complement one another naturally, both in school and in the wider scientific community. The DP chemistry course allows students to develop a wide range of practical skills and to increase facility in the use of mathematics. It also allows students to develop interpersonal and information technology skills, which are essential to life in the 21st century.

Kinetic Art, Sculpture, and Design utilizes a dynamic model of learning in which the classroom is a collaborative work environment, and students explore artistic endeavors whose design solutions rely on -- and benefit from -- the intersection of art and technology. Students will have access to sophisticated manufacturing and forming technologies, and they will utilize actuators, microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronics and electro-mechanical components as they develop their artistic creations.
Building upon the principles of design and engineering technology, students will explore and research novel ways to implement the elements of art and aesthetics. They will add content to their personal digital portfolios throughout the course, documenting their processes and pieces through images and written reflections. For their culminating project, students will create a kinetic sculpture that will include electro-mechanical elements, and utilize a microcontroller, actuators, and sensors in order to create an interactive experience for the viewer.
At the conclusion of this course, students will have showcased their final sculpture in a professional gallery and will have compiled a comprehensive body of work in their personal digital portfolios that highlights both process and product, with special attention given to the effect and impact of incorporating technology into art.

This is a one-term course that will provide, in seminar format, an overview of theoretical constructs and practical applications of AAPLE Academy leadership traits and objectives. Students will further identify and develop their individual approaches and characteristics of effective leadership. Students will finalize their leadership portfolio by providing evidence of their academic leadership and service experiences they have put into action in order to continue to effect positive change locally, nationally, and globally. The course is committed to teaching Academy student leaders how to organize efficient and effective action toward a goal. AAPLE students have developed and reinforced their leadership skills and abilities through service, integrating leadership in curriculum, enrichment, and teambuilding opportunities. They have identified leadership objectives and traits that have guided them in defining, researching, experiencing, and evaluating the leaders within each of them. In this course students will identify their growth as leaders by investigating where they were, where they are, and how they will continue to lead and serve in the future. Students will develop short-term and long-term leadership objective through readings, lectures, and discussion and will finalize and present their four-year Leadership portfolio project.

The fundamental purpose of Integrated Mathematics I is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Integrated Mathematics I uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. This course will prepare students for college-preparatory coursework in high school to meet college entrance requirements.
Additionally, the added rigor of learning in a second language will prepare students for careers and environments in which academic vocabulary will not always be in English.

Conceptual Physics in the Universe is aligned to the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS) and the California Science Framework High School Three Course Model. Students in this course will build upon TK-8 learning in the three-dimensions of CA NGSS science: Science and Engineering practices (SEPs), Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs), and Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs). Conceptual Physics in the Universe includes the following topics: forces and motion, impulse and momentum, energy, electricity and magnetism, and waves. Students will engage in a culminating unit on cosmology, applying concepts of physics to understand the relationships between planet Earth and the formation of the Universe. This class emphasizes conceptual, or qualitative thinking, with a focus on mathematical reasoning using basic algebraic computations. This course will help build stronger mathematical reasoning skills for students needing extra help with mathematics. Laboratory experiments, projects, and in-class demonstrations are utilized to help reinforce the students' understanding of the material. This course will prepare students to meet college entrance requirements.
Additionally, the added rigor of learning in a second language will prepare students for careers and environments in which academic vocabulary will not always be in English.

In this course, students will work towards mastery of the Common Core Spanish Language Arts content standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language skills as they interact with a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is differentiated for the particular needs and challenges of all students. Students study a variety of literary works from various genres, including non-fiction and informational texts, poetry, essays, plays, short stories, and novels. In conjunction with the reading, students complete a variety of writing assignments including multi-paragraph essays, multi draft essays, and timed essays, as well as personal responses, journal entries, and poetry. Study of grammatical concepts and proper usage is taught in the context of the writing process. The integration of technology into the curriculum continues with some online assignments and assessments, typed essays, multimedia presentations, and online research. Common Core State Standards: RL 8.1-9; RI 8.1-9; W 8.1-9; SL 8.1-6; L 8.1-6 Additionally, the added rigor of learning in a second language will prepare students for careers and environments in which academic vocabulary will not always be in English.
